Poker has always been a popular card game, both as a pastime and for gambling. Many people consider it to be the purest card game (discussions with the bridge fanatics can become heated) and is one of the most popular forms of gambling worldwide. Anyone can learn how to play poker, but not everyone will be good at it. If everyone knew how to play poker well, then those of us who do wouldn't have anyone to take money from.

That's one of the basic rules of playing poker, if you don't see a sucker at the table, then you're it. Outside of a friendly game with limited stakes, if you don't know how to play poker you will lose. You absolutely must know the rules, the hands and the odds to do well. You might get lucky and have someone in your game who is just playing for fun, but you should assume that everyone you play with knows how to play poker and play it well. Once you do know how to play poker, you'll have fun playing (or just watching on TV).

Pro Poker

With the rise of televised poker tournaments, poker is now in the mainstream. It seems everyone knows how to play and is willing to discuss it at the bar or the watercooler. The professionals who play do it for a living. As with anything else, if you want to learn how to play poker, watch the pros. They all have important traits for the aspiring poker player to study: they pay attention to cards in play, they know the odds and they don't waste money on foolish bets. If a pro makes a move you wouldn't, figure out why they did it before you rely on your strategy with money on the table.

Poker takes a lot of practice to learn, and there are a few ways you can do that without spending a lot of money. Many of us 'charge' for lessons by playing for money with people trying to learn how to play poker. This is an excellent learning aid as having real money out during lessons concentrates your attention like little else will. But, there are things you need to know before you sit down at a table. Find a computer poker game you like, there are many inexpensive or free poker programs offering a wide variety of play styles. There are also many online poker sites that offer free play. Practice at your computer before you go online, free trials are a waste of time if you haven't memorized the hands yet.

Poker Is Not Gambling

So you've learned how to play poker, you know the odds and understand why a flush beats a straight. The mechanics are second nature and you've gotten over drawing to an inside straight. Now it's time to get serious and start winning at poker.

When you first start to learn to play poker, it looks like a game of chance. Many people believe that their luck will even out if they play long enough. Try and arrange to have as many of these people at the table with you as possible, they bring the money you will be going home with.

Poker is not gambling. There are cards, they get shuffled, money changes hands. Sounds like gambling right ? No. Not at all. Poker is a game of skill. The pros understand this.('about even, or maybe up a little' is shorthand for 'I always lose and try not to think about it') Over time, even just a few hours, the luck will even out. And the people who play for a living have mastered the skills in reading their opponents. If you understand how individuals bet, how they respond to bluffs and can tell when they're probably bluffing then... stay with me... the cards in your hand never matter. If you can get everyone to fold, then you never show your cards (never let anyone examine your cards after winning a hand without a showdown). That's the pro secret, play the players, not the cards. The cards are simply how you manipulate your opponents. Learning to play poker is learning people.

Out of all the poker players. 85% of people play poker just for the fun of it and 90% of all players consider it to be gambling. I play both online poker and live poker for the thrill and for the money. But, I do not consider it to be gambling.

A reason why I play is that I love being put into new situations with different players. Learn the master of reading other players, the thrill and gaining experience and strategy.

I see many players throwing hands all-in and winding up just gambling away their cards. We call these coin flips. Throwing a small pair all in against an Ace King or vise-versa. If you play poker for the edge you know you can't do this. You have to wait for the better hand. Otherwise what is the point of playing? Someone can move all-in at your blind and if you hold a medium pair and figure they have two over-cards, you should always fold even though you are slightly above 50% for the hand. You don't have many chips in the pot if the blinds are small and if you are a good player you should never settle for a 50/50 gamble. If you have a big hand you want to get as many chips as you can out of your opponent but the ideal way to win is taking pots down uncontested without racing down hands all in. Even when you have a pair against two over cards and know you are slightly above a 50% favorite, if the blinds are small you should always fold and tell yourself, "I am not a gambler". You just take the note that your opponent is reckless and wait for a better chance of being a huge favorite in the hand and easily crushing your opponent.

All in all, if you are an experienced playing you can find dominant situations and should pass up on gambling in hands all in. You will be capable of getting all your chips in on dominant situations and will be playing poker with an edge versus just gambling as many players do. You can't stoop down to the level of bad players and accept these gambling situations. You should never accept a coin-flip unless you are forced to by the math of your chips in the pot or have the player covered in chip stacks many times over. If you play poker right and keep finding these edges with good math, you are sure to dominate your opponents by just using the right poker strategy.

Mixing up your play at the table

It is important to mix up your play at the poker table. You should never be playing the same style hand after hand. If you become too predictable, your opponents can easily read you and know what type of hand your holding in most situations. This is why you should change your play constantly and keep your opponents guessing. If you play aggressive hand after hand, your opponents can easily bust you knowing that more times than not, you are holding a weak hand and just trying to take pots with nothing. If you play too tight and fold too often, your opponents will know that you only have a hand when you are betting. They will then be able to read your hand and bully you, betting you out of most pots.

If you change up your play and keep your opponents guessing, you can dictate the action and control the hands that you are in. Keeping your opponents guessing or confused is so important to success at the poker table. Never do anything stupid just to switch it up. You must find the perfect balance. No matter what your style is in poker, if you stick to the same style too often, you will be a weak player and most good players will pick you apart by constantly knowing what type of hand you have. If you mix it up often, you keep them guessing and the table is yours. The best poker players in the world put pressure on their opponents and keep them guessing to make difficult decisions for their chips. Learn to mix up your play and you will see the results of a master poker strategy.

Label the players at your table to read opponents

When playing at a poker table you should after some time be able to label each player. What I mean is label them by the way they play. From super-aggressive to super-tight players and everything in between. By watching hands and what the players have at the end and going back and thinking how they played each hand, you can after not too long label each player. You don't want to make this information the only basis of the moves you make, but the information you can pick up can be beyond useful in making critical poker decisions later in hands against your poker opponents. This poker strategy is vital if you want to have as much of an edge possible in your poker strategy.

When you have players labeled at your table you can start trying to make poker reads on your opponents. If a guy has been raising nearly every hand, you know he is over-aggressive and a solid hand that you hold should be good more times than not if you see him making a play at you. Like I said earlier, don't get too caught into this. You do not want to make this your only factor in making a critical poker decision, but you do want to use this poker information to help you read your poker opponents. It depends if it is online poker or a casino poker game as to how long it takes, but in general, I will pretty much have my table of poker opponents each labeled within an hour to see enough hands to do so. Reading your opponents in poker is helpful to poker strategy and poker success. At some point you will need these skills if you want to dominate poker and win at poker. Labeling your poker opponents is one of many ways to give you an edge in poker decision making.

Poker lessons are a necessary and required skill to learn to play poker free. Like any activity, whether it is sports, music or a professional career, all require some sort of guided lessons to become successful. The best poker lessons are learned through experience and self-education. However, one could spend hundreds of hours in that respect. Therefore, an alternative to learn to play poker free is through shortcut methods. The best shortcut method is learning tricks of the trade from professionals and applying that to your poker game experience.

For example, if I teach you to raise in the hijack position with small suited connectors, you will never experience how well that works until you actually try it. For that reason, I encourage my poker students to learn to play poker free by playing in online poker freerolls. Then applying the strategies that I instruct for an experience of how those lessons work in a real life situation. After picking up a few lessons, you should find opportunities to use them in each poker tournament or cash game you play. Expanding your knowledge through each lesson will also expand your earnings.

Another example of a poker lesson; while most Texas holdem players are familiar with bluffing, the majority have limited knowledge on how to execute a proper bluff to win a pot. Learning poker lessons on how to bluff will not only improve your game, it will increase your bankroll. Furthermore, if accomplished according to professional poker lessons you receive, you rarely get caught bluffing.

The first step to learn how to play poker free is by reading well thought out poker lessons from professionals. Avoid the hype and misinformation found all over the internet. Although every poker player has an opinion on how to do this or that, the bottom line is learning from a professional source are your best bet. Additionally, you should shy away from poker lessons that cost money until you have reached the point in your game that you can no longer learn from all the free sources.

Plenty of top professionals do NOT make a habit of revealing some of the most effective poker strategy to the public. (After all, why would they?) Therefore, you must learn how to play poker free by experiencing those lessons and then consider paying a professional to teach you one on one in the future. You can start today on your venture to learn how to play poker free, by joining a blog that has plenty of lessons and articles available at no cost.

If you're going to play poker--and who isn't these days-you might as well play it well. Poker is a lot more fun when you're winning. Now even the best poker players don't win every time they sit down at the felt. You can't win them all, but you can win a lot of them. Here are a few little hints to get you started playing poker to win.

The most important thing to know about poker is that there is no substitute for experience. No matter how many books you read or poker shows you watch, your most important lessons will be learned right there at the poker table. You don't have to risk a lot of money at first. Many online poker sites offer games with limits as low as $.25 and $.50. Keep in mind though that the higher the limits, the better the quality of play you are likely to encounter.

While experience is the best teacher, there are a number of quality books on the market that will help improve your poker play. David Sklansky's "Theory of Poker" is a great starting point. It will introduce you to basic concepts such as pot odds and relative hand strengths that will tell you what hands to keep putting money in the pot with and when. The two "Super/System" books compiled by Doyle Brunson provide an informative overview of the various poker games you are likely to encounter. If Hold`em tournaments are your thing, Dan Harrington's two "Harrington on Hold`em" volumes are the best around. The Harrington books get into some advanced concepts though, so you should have a decent grasp of the fundamentals before you tackle them.

If you can't wait to get into action, there are a few key things you should keep in mind. Poker players are typically grouped along two dimensions: Tight to Loose and Passive to Aggressive. The looser a player is, the more hands he or she is likely to play. Passive players do a lot more flat calling, and aggressive players are usually the ones betting. The best way to play is with a tight-aggressive style. This means that you don't play that many hands, but when you do play a hand, you play it very strongly, with betting that puts pressure on your opponents to fold. It sounds easy enough, and most players will tell you they are tight aggressive, but it's harder than it seems.

A good tight player is probably only going to play around two out of every ten hands (this is in a cash game, in tournament play, rising blinds will force you to loosen up your standards as you go along). That doesn't sound like too much fun. You didn't come to watch, you came to play, right? But good hands don't come around that often, and when you get involved in a pot, you'd like to have a better hand than your opponent. If he's playing a lot more hands than you are, odds are you will have a better starting hand most of the time. The bottom line is that the most important skill for you as a starting poker player, more than the ability to bluff or read tells or anything like that, is patience. If you can wait for a good hand, and if you have the discipline to fold that hand when it's clear that someone has you beat, you'll have a big advantage over your novice opponents.

So if you're only playing 20 percent of the hands, what should you be doing the other 80 percent of the time, watching football? Absolutely not! Watch your opponents. Just because you're not in the hand doesn't mean you're out of the game. Watch the players who are in the hand. It's a great opportunity because they aren't likely to be paying too much attention to you and you can get a more honest read on them. Observe their betting patterns. If you're lucky enough to see their cards at the end, try to remember how they played the hand so that when you are in against them, you may get some clues as to what they're holding. If this seems somewhat boring to you, make a game of it. Try to guess as the hand goes along what all the players involved have. Adjust your prediction based on the play of the hand. It's quite rewarding to see someone turn over his hand on the river and find he had exactly what you calculated he would.

Finally, you'll be doing yourself a favor if you keep track of your wins and losses. At some point, you'll have a feel for when you're at the top of your game, and when a game is good or bad for you to continue playing in. Until then, establishing a set amount that you will allow yourself to win or lose will help you to remain disciplined and stay within your bankroll, which will make poker a generally more fun and rewarding experience.

Rick ?Stone Face? Ellers started playing poker while he was a paratrooper stationed in Fort Bragg, NC. He currently writes part time for PokerListings.com where you can learn about the exciting World Series of Poker and find great information about Online Poker Rooms.

Playing a match of poker with your buddies is always a great way to occupy a few hours (or several), but what do you do when you come into the realization that you are good enough to play with the big boys, or even for money? While jumping the gun and attempting to enter high-stakes cash tournaments may be a bit out of the question, venturing online to play poker is more reasonable and opens up literally thousands of new poker playing opportunities.

Playing with your buddies most likely entailed you and a few friends sitting around a table playing aimlessly with little plastic chips, however playing poker online means that you can play against opponents from around the world and from all kinds of different skill levels; from rookie to seasoned poker veterans. One of the greatest aspects of online poker is the fact that rookie poker players can sharpen their skills as well as start playing for money, or playing for more money.

If you have ever thought about how many different variations there are to poker, then you will come into the realization that there are several different ways to play. Most people have heard of Texas Hold-Em, especially considering that it is extremely popular among poker enthusiasts both online and at a physical poker table. There are also other common variations of poker such as Omaha, Five-Card Draw and Seven-Card Stud and hundreds of not-as-common variations such as H.O.R.S.E poker and Caribbean-Stud poker. No matter what the game, taking the plunge into the vast world of online poker will often have a place for everything.

For some reason or another, a lot of people will not play like they mean it around their friends or family. This could stem from a variety of different reasons from being shy to not wanting to play aggressive because they are your friends or family. Either way, all that can change by playing online simply because you have no relation or tie to your opponents usually and can easily play to win. Regardless of whether you are playing online or with people you know, you should always play to win because your reputation can be built higher and you could potentially win money by doing so.

Online poker usually never takes a break. No matter where in the world you are, there are always going to online matches and tournaments happening constantly. If you want to play a no-limit round of online poker at 3 a.m. then there will most likely be hundreds of open tables at a variety of online casinos. The time and day have no affect on online poker at all; you can play at 3 a.m., 10 p.m. or whatever time, seven days a week. That means you do not have to gather all of your buddies together, or wait for a local tournament; rather you can play impulsively whenever you feel like it.

There are literally thousands upon thousands of online casinos out there waiting for you to come and sign up with them. Not only can you play poker, but you can play all kinds of other gambling favorites because after all, it is a casino. You can find many of the most popular online casinos by simply utilizing a search engine and a lot of these casinos will let you play a little for free but still offer the opportunity to win real money. There are so many benefits to playing in an online casino, so what are you waiting for? Go online and check them out.

Currently, poker is popularly played worldwide, from the casinos of Las Vegas to the makeshift poker tables at homes for poker night, poker has really made a mark on people around the world. In fact, they have the world poker tour where different skilled poker players all across the world play for supremacy. Even though the game involves luck more than anything else, psyching out your opponent is considered an important skill to be a highly skilled poker player. However, due to the development of technology and the widespread use of the Internet, people from France can play with those in Macau without even participating in a world poker tour. This is the magic of real on-line poker.

Real play poker online is played by numerous people just like normal poker. In fact, online poker is played by many more because it does not require a person to leave the house. You just sit in front of a computer and with a high speed internet connection and you are ensured of a real play poker experience. You will have to rely on pure skill, luck, as well as trust in the two cards on your hand and on the flop.

Playing poker online has many options. There are online poker games that are played for fun and nothing more, and there are also real play poker online games that will really make you shell out money.
Many might be playing real play poker for fun, but once it gets real and everything gets serious, it is a different league on its own. In fact, when money is at stake, everything changes including playing poker. This is the same for online poker. The fact that millions and millions are playing online poker is a good sign that it will soon be bigger than anyone thought it would be. In just a few years time, online poker will have its own league just like the world poker tour.
